RES Enrichment Program
by posted 01/27/2010

The Jesse P. Sanford Boys & Girls Club of Redding, CT will be welcoming new and returning members to a new and exciting after-school enrichment program. The program will be held 3 times a week at both the Redding Community Center (RCC) as well as the Redding Elementary School (RES).

Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) has a lineup of nationally tested and proven programs that address today's most pressing youth issues, teaching young people the skills they need to succeed in life.

As part of the Boys & Girls Club of Redding Enrichment Program, your child will have the opportunity to engage in programs in the BGCA’s 5 Core Program Areas: Character & Leadership, Education & Career Development, Health & Life Skills, The Arts, and Sports, Fitness, and Recreation.

Some examples of our nationally recognized programs are:

PowerHour: Making Minutes Count: a comprehensive homework help and tutoring program, POWER HOUR is designed to raise the academic proficiency of Club members ages 6 to12

Project Learn:
Project Learn reinforces and enhances the skills and knowledge young people learn at school through "high-yield" learning activities at the Club and in the home. Based on Dr. Reginald Clark's research that shows fun, but academically beneficial activities increase academic performance, these activities include leisure reading, writing activities, homework help and games like Scrabble® which develop youth's cognitive skills. Project Learn emphasizes collaborations between Club staff, parents and school personnel. Formally evaluated by Columbia University, Project Learn has been proven to boost the academic performance of Club members

Triple Play: A Game Plan for the Mind, Body and Soul
Triple Play, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company, is a dynamic wellness program currently being offered in Boys & Girls Clubs that demonstrates how eating right, keeping fit and forming positive relationships add up to a healthy lifestyle. The goal of the Triple Play program is to improve Club members’ knowledge of healthy habits; increase the number of hours per day they participate in physical activities; and strengthen their ability to interact positively with others and engage in positive relationships.
Program components include:
• Healthy Habits Nutrition Curriculum
• Daily Challenges
• Sports Clubs
• Triple Play Games
• Social Recreation

These are just a few examples of what the Boys & Girls Club of Redding’s new enrichment program will offer. We will also be offering digital arts workshops, family game and movie nights, and a Boys & Girls Club of Redding newsletter run entirely by members to keep the Boys & Girls Club community aware of what we are doing here at the RBGC.

3rd Annual Civic

RBGC Holds Third Annual Civic Day Event

The Redding Boys & Girls Club in concert with The Town of Redding and First Selectman Natalie Ketcham held the Third Annual Redding Town Civic Day in early December.

31 members of the RBGC were sworn in as town officials and shadowed their assigned personnel for the day, where they learned first hand about how the Town of Redding is managed on a daily basis from the people who make Redding the special place it is to live.

The RBGC has re-established Civic Day which was a major event of Boys &  Girls Clubs of America many years ago when some of the current members of the Board of Directors were active youth participants of their hometown clubs.

The nominated youth qualify to "lead the town" by being exemplary citizens of Redding both in town and most importantly in the classroom.  Once nominated for their activity at the RBGC, the "candidates" are introduced to the principals of both Redding Elementary and John Read Middle Schools for acceptance and are rewarded with an excused absence from school as they assume their responsibilities in "doing the town's business" as First Selectman refers to the hard work performed by our town officials and "officials for the day".

The 31 student leaders were guests for a catered luncheon in the Town Hall Community Room where they were presented with Certificates of Achievement by Ms. Ketcham, Carlos Collazzo and Board VP Joe Gibaldi.

For more information on RBGC Civic Day, please contact Board Member Andy Acocella at
