In 2008, the Mathews Athletic and Recreation Association (MARA) elected to make the Bambino Buddy-Ball dream a reality! Mentally and/or physically challenged athletes of all ages enjoy a friendly competition of softball. We had over 20 kids join us on Sundays and the number of participating athletes is growing. Our program is focused on providing a friendly game of softball/baseball for mentally and/or physically challenged athletes between the ages of 5 and 18 ages.
Almost every Sunday afternoon from April through June something very special will be happening at Goodman Park. Buddy Ball pairs players with volunteers from the MARA Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth baseball and softball leagues who receive instruction in how to work with children with disabilities. The game combines elements of tee ball, coach-pitch, and kid-pitch, to accommodate children of varying skills. “It’s all about having fun, building confidence and self-esteem, and developing sportsmanship and love of the game,” said Commissioner of Bat and Ball Sports Bob Poore. “This is real baseball, with trained coaches and umpires, and players will be able to experience the thrill of making plays, getting hits, and rounding the bases.”
Registration and uniforms are free. Mara is a 501 (C) 3 Non Profit Organization and any contributation is greatly appreciated!
