The Whalers played an exceptional weekend of hockey in the State Touranament at Falmouth Ice Arena. After winning the first two games in the bracket the Whalaers took the eventual State Champs, The Dorchester Chiefs in game 3 of the round robin. Dorchester came out on top with a 2-1 victory. The Whalers 2 and 1 record was good enough to advance to the medal round where they took on Hanover in the semi finals.
This was a game for the ages. It took triple overtime for the Whalers to fianlly finish off Hanover in an extremely exciting hard fought game. After a nearly 3 hour contest, the State final was scheduled to begin in less than 2 hours. Fortunately Mass Hockey rules prevent a final from starting with less than a 4 hour window between games. The stage was set for a rematch with Dorchester.
The Whalers took a 1-0 lead to the locker room after the first period but is was obvious that the gas tank was nearly empty.
After 3 periods the Chiefs from Dorchester proved too much and the Whalers who lost 5-2, finishing the season as the State Runner up in the U18 division.
A bid to the National Tournament in April is still a possibility as USA hockey fills the tournament brackets. Final decision is expected in January.
Congratulations to all the players, coaches and support staff for an excellent year.
Look for tryout information for 2010-2011 in your local rinks as well as here on the official site of Whaler hockey.
