Learn to Skate

YMCA Learn to Skate

Ages: Parent Tot, 4-6, and 7-17
Sessions (6 weeks): 2/27-4/15   No classes March 22-28


The YMCA Learn to Skate program is designed for participants ages 4-Adult. Our Parent Tot level begins at age 3. The entire focus is on learning skating skills and having fun! Each developmental level is comprised of various skating components. The progression has been structured for the gradual skill development of all participants. Our program offers a great community atmosphere, friendly instructors, and strives to instill the YMCA Character Development Core Values of "Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility" in all of its skaters. Learning how to skate can bring a lifetime of enjoyment.


Parent Tot-Age 3
A fun first introduction to ice skating! Games, balance, and coordination on ice! Parent and child on the ice together. Parent need not be a proficient skater....just comfortable standing on skates and moving around a bit.

Ages 4-6 (Kinderskate)
Snowballs-Level 1
Beginner class-No skating experience: Introduction to falling and getting up properly, marching, march and glide, dip, toe kisses.
Snowbears-Level 2
Beginner class-1-5 time's on ice: Intro to falling and getting up properly, marching, 2 foot glide (short), dip (moving), forward hourglasses, hop, backward wiggles, snowplow stop.
Snowbirds-Level 3
Snowplow stop, two foot glide, pineapples, forward hourglasses (6-8), backward wiggles, one foot glide (short), curves.
Penguins-Level 4
Forward skating, forward hourglasses across rink, one foot glide (long), backward hourglasses, forward one foot sculling, edge balances, slalom.

Ages6-17
Snowflakes-Level 1A
Beginner class-No skating experience/minimal skating experience: Intro. to falling and getting up properly, forward skating, 2-foot glide, dip, forward hourglasses, backward skating, hop, curves, snowplow stop, and good skating form.
Snowflakes-Level 1B
For beginners who may have skated recreationally but never taken lessons (this level teaches beginning skating basics for the development of all future skating skills): Level 1B skills are listed above in level 1A and also includes: pineapples, advanced forward hourglasses, 1-foot glides, backward wiggles and hourglasses, slalom.
Snowbunnies-Level 2A
Forward skating, snowplow stop, one-foot glide, scooter pushes, backward hourglasses, backward glide, forward one foot sculling, two foot turn (standstill).
Snowbunnies-Level 2B
Advanced forward skating, two foot turn (moving), forward edge balances, inside edges, intro to forward crossovers, airplane, backward snowplow stop, hockey stop.
Snow Angels-Level 3A
For intermediate basic skill level skaters: Advanced forward skating (stroking), forward crossovers, backward one-foot sculling, backward one-foot glides,  backward edge balances, hockey stop.
Snow Angels-Level 3B
Backward crossovers, T-stops, backward spiral, backward stroking, backward to forward, backward to forward transitions, three-turn.
Icicles-Level 4
Figure skating elements: consecutive forward outside and inside edges, mohawk, lunge, slalom, bunny hop, alternating crossovers, pivot, 2-foot spin, waltz jump (standstill), waltz three-turns, combination of elements.
Ice Sculptures-Level 5
Figure skating elements: forward inside three turn, backward inside and backward outside edges, backward outside and backward inside three turn, forward outside mohawk, one foot spin, waltz jump, step sequences, half flip, mazurka, beg. Scratch spin, and moving three-turns.

Figure Skating Class

YMCA Figure Skating Class

Age: 7-17
Levels: 3A, 3B, 4, 5+

This class is offered to level 3A and above according to our Learn to Skate Curriculum and the prerequisite for these classes is successful completion of levels 1A through 2B.  If you are a beginner skater please see the Learn to Skate curriculum levels 1A and up so you may learn to basics to join us at a later time for figure skating.

Dress Code: Skating dress and tights or leggings or exercise pants. No jeans or pants. Bring sneakers for "off-ice" training class.

Hockey Skating Skills

YMCA Hockey Skating Skills

Age: 7-17
Levels: 2, 3

This class is part of our Learn to Skate program speciffically designed for hockey skaters.  The curriculum includes skating skills, egework, crossovers, and transitions.  The class is offered for those getting ready to play hockey in the future and those who currently play, but are looking to improve their skating skills and power skating.  If you are a beginner skater, please see the prerequisites listed below.

Full Gear is optional - Helmets and Shin Pads are recommended.

Prerequisites: 
All skates must have completed the YMCA Learn to Skate Program Levels 1A, 1B, and 2A to learn the basics of skating, stops, one foot skating, and backward skating, in order to participate in the Hockey Skating Skills class.

Skill Levels:

Hockey Skating Skills - Level 2 - forward skating using full strides, edge work, backward skating, transitions, crossovers, stops and starts

Hockey Skating Skills - Level 3 - Power skating, advanced edgework, backward crossovers, advanced crossovers, power turns.

Adult Learn to Skate

YMCA Adult Learn to Skate

Ages: 18+
Levels: A1, A2, A3, A4

The Adult curriculum is designed for the beginner adult skater and is based on the United States Figure Skating adult skating program. The curriculum is designed to promote physical fitness, improve balance and coordination while learning skating techniques. Adult skaters will progress at their own rate while being challenged and motivated with an emphasis on having fun. The progression has been structured for the gradual skill development of all participants. We offer instruction to participants interested in figure skating, recreational skating, and hockey. Our program offers a great community atmosphere, friendly instructors, and strives to instill the YMCA Character Development Core Values of "Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility" in all of its skaters. Learning how to skate can bring a lifetime of enjoyment.
