posted 09/10/2009 As a supplement to the team's web site and Facebook page, students, parents, alumni and fans of the Ballard High School track and field & cross country teams can now follow the fortunes of the teams on Twitter. Folks who wish to follow the Ballard track and cross country teams can now receive short updates on meets, training sessions, and other happenings through "tweets" by signing up on the teams' Twitter site at http://twitter.com/ For those not familiar with how Twitter works, Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read other users' updates known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length which are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have subscribed to them (known as followers). Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow anybody to access them. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or applications such as Tweetie, Twitterrific, Twitterfon, TweetDeck and feedalizr. The service is free to use over the Internet, but using SMS may incur phone service provider fees. "This will be a work in progress," said Ballard High School director of track & field/cross country operations Paul Merca. "We hope we can do quick updates on how the team and its athletes are doing during the heat of competition, as well as let you know what's new with the team." "Having the ability to send 'tweets' will hopefully help parents who are stuck at work or are en route to one of our meets to quickly find out how their sons or daughters are doing." The inspiration for starting a team Twitter site came from the success that new University of Washington football coach Steve Sarkisian had with his site (http://twitter.com/CoachSark) as a way to connect with the fans of the Husky football program. Other prominent people who use Twitter as a means to communicate include President Barack Obama, basketball superstar Shaquille O'Neal, and Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. posted 03/16/2008 The Athletic Booster Club recently recieved the following email from Golden Beaver Barney Scott '52. The email included a photograph of Barney and other members of the "Southern California Golden Beaver Society" showing off their Beaver Gear in a demonstration of Beaver Pride, even after 50 years!!
The Athletic Booster Club would like to thank Barney and his fellow Golden Beavers for setting the standard for Beaver Pride. Hey, Kevin, enjoyed reading of your reaction to our CA reunion of six old Ballard grads gathering down here in San Diego last month. We are all delighted anytime to hear of parents who support our alma mater! Believe it or not, even after 50+ years we still have that old Ballard spirit. You most certainly have our permission to use this photo if it helps promote school athletics: ![]() From left to right: Ron Fowler '53, formerly with Boeing Space Systems, retired and living in Clearwater, FL; Dr. Ron Bray '53, retired Seattle OB-GYN; Henry Bjornsson '51, U W Law School grad, still active in the Seattle area; Al Johanessen '53, retired Submarine Commander, USN living in San Diego; Ivan "Too Tall" Bay '53, former basketball center at BHS and retired corp. benefits manager in Temecula, CA; and, Barney Scott '52, retired San Diego elementary school and college instructor. ...each one of us was present on Thanksgiving Day in 1951 down at Memorial Stadium when the BHS football team came from behind 0 - 13, to roar back in the final quarter to beat Bremerton 14 - 13. Wow, we are all still hoarse from cheering over that cliff hanger! Those Bull Dogs on Bremerton's front line outweighed our front line by 20 to 40 lb. per man; though not nearly enough to stand up to Beaver power that day. This holiday classic is still Ballard's one and only state football championship on record. Check the Seattle Times or P.I. archives for this fact. Hope the photo transmits this time, Kevin. Yah, shure, you betcha' ! Regards, Barney Scott, representative Golden Beaver Society of Southern California ![]() | |
