HRYL is run completely by volunteers. We welcome volunteers to assist with making the experience a positive one for all involved. Volunteer opportunities include helping with coaching, equipment, uniforms, field lining, spirit wear, fund raising, score/time keeping, home field set-up/take-down, and as team parent. There is a $30 opt-out fee for families that choose not to volunteer.
Registration
Registration opens on December 1 and runs through February. For the 2010 spring season, the registration fee is $140.00 for December registrations ($120 for second sibling, $100 for third sibling), $150.00 for January registrations, and $160.00 for February registrations. A $20 administration fee will be deducted from all registration refunds. The number of teams fielded is limited by the number of volunteer coaches and to achieve appropriate team size. To ensure adequate playing time and player development, we endeavor to cap boys’ teams at 20 players and girls’ teams at 18 players for U11, U13, and U15 age groups. For boys and girls U9 age groups the cap is 15 players. Therefore, while we try our best to place every registrant on a team, we recommend registering early to avoid wait lists and possible non-placement.
Equipment
Boys’ equipment is available to rent. Rental equipment includes helmets, shoulder pads, arm pads, stick, and gloves. The equipment rental fee is $75 and requires a $100 deposit. Boys are issued a jersey and girls are issued game apparel that must be returned after the last game in reasonably clean condition. Boys are issued game shorts which they keep and girls are issued a practice t-shirt which they keep.
Teams
NVYLL includes divisions for U9, U11, U13, U15, and U17 boys and girls. At the U11, U13, and U15 age brackets, there are three levels of play for boys and two levels of play for girls. Depending on the number of registrants, HRYL attempts to field an A, B, and C team at each boys’ age bracket and an A and B team at each girls’ age bracket. The U9 age bracket has one level of play for both boys and girls.
Player Assessments
Player assessments are usually held at outside fields in February. Assessments are very important for correct skill level placement. Proper player placement ensures more fun, adequate playing time, and a better chance for all to succeed and return to play another season. We schedule multiple assessments because we expect weather to affect some, and understand that many players are still participating in winter sports.
Team Selection
Team selection takes place by the coaches after assessments are complete. No player is guaranteed a spot on a particular team regardless of where they played the prior season. Head coaches will notify their players and inform them about team practices, which typically begin in late February or early March, and are scheduled around the coaches schedule. "A" skill level teams practice three times per week for one to two hours before and during the season. "A" skill level teams are very competitive and require a full commitment from players, parents, and coaches. The U9 teams usually practice once or twice a week. All other teams typically practice 2 times per week. Our practice fields are Herndon Middle School and Sugarland Run Park and other turf and grass fields in the Herndon-Reston area.
Game Schedule
The 2010 season begins March 26, 2010. The boys and girls will play an 8 game schedule. Boys games are on Saturday and girls games are on Sundays. There are no games held on Easter weekend or Memorial Day weekend. The season culminates with playoffs for all eligible teams at U15, U13, and U11. Girls playoffs conclude June 6 and boys playoffs conclude June 13. The emphasis is on teaching at the U9 age group; therefore, there are no U9 playoffs, or scores kept. HRYL’s home game field is Herndon Middle School.
Player-Parent Meeting
A player/parent meeting is held in February to communicate expectations for the upcoming season.
