U13 Boys Battled for State Title
by posted 12/07/2009

In taking their first NHSA title in their inaugural season at the competitive level, Coach Raul Rosa's team lost to Hooksett 3-0 in a rain-soaked NHSA divisional final. The weather, however, didn't dampen Exeter's competitive spirit, as they battled Hooksett to a scoreless tie at halftime. Despite some excellent goaltending by Henrik Barbin behind a resolute team defense by his Exeter teammates, Hooksett continued to press forward into Exeter's defensive, half and got the eventual game-winning goal early in the second half.

U12 Boys Win State Title
by posted 12/07/2009

Coach Ethan Shapiro's team boys capped off an amazing late-season run by taking a decisive 8-1 victory over GSYSL champions Dover, winning the fall state championship. After advancing to Londonderry as a result of back-to-back upsets of top-seeded Rochester and second-seeded Lakes Region United in the NHSYSL tourney, Exeter conceded an early goal to a previously-undefeated Dover squad inside of three minutes, before scoring three straight goals before halftime, and then putting the match out of sight with five unanswered goals.
Evan Royer scored four goals for Exeter, while Jack Carr had three, and Emmett Bloomer one. Collin Shapiro had six assists. Goalie Ryan Scerbo played strongly in front of a consistently strong team defense, which held the key to the team's remarkable post-season run to top NHSA honors, as the Express held its opponents to only two goals in the three league and state tourney games.

U14 Boys Division 1 Team

Boys U14 Division 1 Team
The EYSA Boys U14 Division 1 team ended a very successful Fall season losing on penalty kicks to SUSC in the November State Championship game.  The Express had a terrific season winning the Columbus Day tournament, the regular season NHSYSL division as well as the NHSYSL Division Championship game.  The loss in the State championship game came after 80 minutes of scoreless soccer that witnessed the Express team dominating the majority of the play but unable to find that elusive goal in down pouring / windy conditions.  All season long, the U14 Boys played strong control and possession oriented soccer.  They scored an average of over 5 goals per game giving up an average of 0.6 goals.  A key to their success was controlling the middle of the field while attacking with speed and defending intelligently.

Exeter Youth Soccer U14 Girls Win 3rd Consecutive State Title
by posted 11/27/2009

2009 Exeter U14 Girls State Champions
The EYSA U-14 Girls recently earned their third consecutive NHSA Fall State
title with a dominant 3-0 rout of previously-undefeated GSYSL champions
Hopkinton.  Despite playing most of the match in a wind-driven rain and
cold temperatures, the Express took control of the match from the outset,
and never let Hopkinton's potent attack get going, enjoying a wide
disparity in possession and attacking play in the early going before
Melissa Murray tallied the opener at the 20 minute mark, with assists to
Molly Ryan and Laura Goodwin.  The Express continued to pile on the
pressure in the closing minutes of the first half, and a minute after
Murray struck the crossbar in the latter stages of the half, Sydney
Petersen would slot home at the right post with a minute left to send
Exeter into halftime up 2-0.  Libby Abizaid and Murray assisted on
Petersen's goal.  Playing into strong wind  in the second half, Exeter
ratcheted up the attacking pressure, largely due to the dominant play of
center midfielders Rebecca Field, Heather MacDougall and Sophie Pickett,
with the three combining for MacDougall's clinching goal midway through the
second half to seal the outcome.  Exeter's watertight defense - led by
sweeper Jenna Connor, stopper Jenna Gill, and fullbacks Roz Jones and
Sydney Stella - did not allow Hopkinton a single shot on goal until less
than ten minutes were left in the match.  Exeter 'keeper Jessica Long
preserved the shutout with two diving saves in the closing minutes, while
midfielder Taylor Orlando returned to the line-up from an extended
midseason injury to contribute solid second half minutes on the right wing.
Striker Erin MacDonald almost tallied late in the match, and all-purpose
defender Erin Congdon contributed to Exeter's stifling defensive effort
with heady ball-winning play, and excellent transitional outlet passing.
The coaches also want to cite the example of starting striker Casey Scott,
who suffered a broken foot in mid-season, but worked valiantly to try to
get back into the line-up in time for the Finals.  While she was ultimately
not cleared to play, she attended every match during her recovery, and
provided a great source of motivation and inspiration for her teammates.

The Fall '09 NHSA title is the fourth statewide title for the team, which
is also the defending '09 Spring State Open Cup U-13 champions.  In their
four NHSA title encounters, the Express have overcome undefeated GSYSL
opponents on each occasion, and have outscored their opponents by an
aggregate of 12-1 in those games.  In taking this Fall's NHSA U-14 Division
One title, the girls have earned EYSA's first-ever statewide honors at the
U-14 level in club history.

Record Number of EYSA Teams Advance to State Finals
by posted 11/16/2009

Five teams with the Exeter Youth Soccer Association competed in the NHSYSL Fall Tournament last weekend at the Seacoast United Soccer Club complex in Epping.

U-14 girls

Exeter (11-0) overcame a defensive-minded ROSO team in the Division One tourney finals on Sunday with two second-half goals, and earned a third straight trip to the NHSA fall finals with a 2-0 victory. Exeter broked the tie in the second half, when Sophie Pickett's pass found fellow midfielder Sydney Petersen open in the left channel, and her shot snuck inside the near post for the goal.

Exeter added an insurance goal at the midway mark of the second half, when after more constant attacking pressure, fullback Sydney Stella one-timed an attempted ROSO clearance from 25 yards out, and found the top left corner.

Exeter now advances to the NHSA D1 tourney finals, looking for a third straight Fall NHSA title, and their fourth overall NHSA statewide title, including last spring's first-ever EYSA Spring NHSA title in the U-13 State Open Cup.

U-14 boys

Exeter (8-1-1) punched its ticket to the NHSA Fall Tournament finals with consecutive wins last weekend, earning first place in NHSYSL Division One. After advancing in Saturday afternoon's semifinals with a 3-0 victory over Derry. Exeter faced defending NHSYSL champions Rye in a memorable finals rematch on Sunday between the two teams who met in the same game last fall at the U-13 level.

This time, Exeter turned the tables to emerge with a 2-1 overtime victory. Rye scored in the first half, and led 1-0 at halftime, but Exeter tied the score with a goal from Henry Stevens.

Exeter built momentum after the equalizer and pushed the attack up through the end of regulation play, and about midway into overtime Tom Stone struck for the game-winning goal. Goalie Drew Scerbo played well.

U-13 girls

Exeter (7-4) swept through its two NHSYSL playoff games last weekend and earned Division Two league honors. On Saturday, Exeter beat Oyster River 3-0 in the semifinals.

Anna Vogt scored two goals for Exeter, while Maddie Lodico had one.

In Sunday's tourney finals, Exeter jumped ahead of Portsmouth early in the match with two more goals from Vogt. who would later complete her hat trick in Exeter's 3-1 victory. Lodico, Allison Woodilla and Kayla Fielding all played well, as did Megan Berry, Bailee McGlynn and Courtney Smith. Exeter's back four of Rachel Leonard, Olivia Donovan, Carrie Burke and Hannah McDonnell anchored the defense, who were playing without regular sweeper Meredith Labelle, and combined with goalie Elise McNaughton to allow only a single goal over the weekend.

U-12 girls

Coach Jon Huot's Division One team (7-4-1) advanced in the NHSYSL tourney semifinals with a 2-0 victory against Oyster River. Goalies Julia Fieldsend and Courtney Gallant led the defensive effort, while Keala Eichholz scored both Exeter's goals, the first from a penalty kick, and the second on a strong close-range finish assisted by Jessie Blaisdell.

In Sunday's divisional finals against the Hampton Attack, Hampton scored early and hung on for a 1-0 win. Sydney Nappi and Madison Lavoie played well for Exeter.

U-12 boys

Coach Ethan Shapiro's team (5-5-2) provided the biggest upsets of the weekend, after entering the NHSYSL tourney as the fourth seed.

In Saturday's semifinals, Exeter upset top-seeded Rochester, 3-0. Evan Royer, Collin Shapiro, and Jack Carr scored for Exeter.

On Sunday, Exeter defeated second-seed Lakes Region United, 2-1, earning top divisional honors.

After a scoreless first half, the Lakers broke the deadlock with 15 minutes left in the game, but Royer tied it up with 10 minutes to play, and then scored again with three minutes left to put Exeter in front. Exeter played great team defense all weekend long, and held off a strong Lakers attack in the final minutes, with goalie Ryan Scerbo making a terrific save with seconds left in the game to preserve the victory, and send the boys on their first-ever trip to the NHSA Fall Finals.

EYSA U14 Boys Close Out With Tournament Win!
by posted 07/06/2009

EYSA U14 Boys Win Maine Tournament
Exeter Youth Soccer Association U14 Boys Close Out With Tournament Win –
Brunswick Maine was host to Seacoast ME Coastal Challenge. This is the
largest Spring Tournament in our area. Teams from as far away as
Connecticut and Vermont travel to Maine to participate. For some teams this
would be there farewell as many move onto High School in the fall. One such
group ventured from the Exeter area. A team that for many was formed as a
U10 Boys some four years ago. The core has been together for the past 3
years. Isaac Baybutt, Sam Young, Carter Johnson, Jack Darmody, Connor
O’Hurley, Tom Wolters, Matt Swanton, Hunter Vars, Corey Guen, Miles
Herrick, Adam Urquhart and Parker Dubuque have played together for over 100
games. Others have joined the core group and brought talent, passion and
energy, Ki Davis, Kevin Gendron, Peter Eisenhaure, Skippy Girard and Chip
McNaughton.

They were the class of the tournament, going undefeated and not allowing a
goal to be scored against them in the 3 qualifying matches. Saturday’s
first game set the tone as they dominated a team from Maine with a 4-0 win
with goals by Carter, Peter and two by Skippy. Saturday afternoon play
resulted in a 3-0 victory with goals by Matt, Adam and Chip. Sunday morning
results were another shutout 3-0 with goals by Carter; Peter stretched the
score to 2-0 and the game ended on a tally by Tom. Onto the Championship.

The Championship match would place the EYSA U14 Boys versus the Seacoast
United squad from Epping. The score was 0-0 at half time. About midway
through the second half an Exeter player was tackled just outside the
Seacoast penalty box. Seacoast set the wall as Exeter selected Skippy to
take the kick. It would take a magical shot to put the ball in net as
Seacoast covered all the angles. Skippy approached the ball drove it with
the outside of his foot to the right of the wall where there was a slight
opening to the net. The ball had great spin and as it appeared around the
wall the Seacoast keeper was surprised by the location and the ball found
its home just inside the post. With a little over 3 minutes to play a
Seacoast player broke free down the sideline. As our defense closed we made
our only mistake of the day. A hard sliding tackle resulted in a penalty
kick and a 1-1 score. An overtime periods of two 5-minute periods under
the golden goal rule passed with no score. Onto a shootout. On the field
for Exeter would be Skippy, Peter, Tom, Adam, Kevin, Carter, Isaac, Sam,
Ki, Hunter and Connor. This would not be a quick ending as each team
matched the other and each keeper made pressure filled saves. After the
first five resulted in a tie we moved in to sudden death penalty
kicks. Deep into the line-up at number nine Kevin Gendron’s shot hit the
cross bar and caromed down into the goal. Exeter now waited to see if
Connor could make one last save. The Seacoast player had a chance to keep
the drama alive but Connor blocked his shot. The team streamed on the field
to pile onto their goalie in celebration. A victory was achieved and an era
ended in dramatic fashion.

One cannot end this story without mention of the parents of this team. The
coaches and your sons have appreciated your commitment and passion. Your
sons could not have done it without you. You should be proud of how they
have grown and progressed as they have learned how much commitment it takes
to be a winner. It is not the final score that matter the most to us but
the simple fact that they played the beautiful game with Pride, Passion and
Determination.

FC Exeter U-13 Girls emerge with top honors in U14 Division!
by posted 06/11/2009

Exeter U-13 Girls win the Memorial Day Classic Tournament
May 25th, 2009

AMHERST (NH) - The FC Exeter U-13 Girls travelled halfway across the state
over Memorial Day Weekend to join nearly 200 teams from across New England
at the Amherst Soccer Club's prestigious "Memorial Day Classic" tournament
on the grounds of Souhegan High School, and emerged with top honors in the
U-14 Girls division with a clean sweep of five games, culminating in a 4-0
Divisional Finals victory over the previously undefeated Oyster River U-14
Girls on Memorial Day afternoon.

In the round robin stage of the tournament on Saturday and Sunday, FC
Exeter swept three games in a row from a succession of strong opponents,
including RI Superliga club teams from North Kingstown SC (4-0) and two
entries from Ocean State Soccer Club (7-1 and 3-1), earning the top seed in
the 9 team division for Monday's divisional playoffs.

In Monday's semifinals match against OSSC, Exeter snapped a 1-1 halftime
tie with an early goal in the second half from Sydney Petersen, and
clinched their spot in the divisional finals with an insurance goal from
Melissa Murray with just over 5 minutes left in the 3-1 victory.

The U-14 divisional finals would pit neighboring programs Exeter and Oyster
River in a battle of undefeated teams who are both defending NHSA Fall '08
state champions - Exeter at the U-13 Select level, and Oyster River at the
U-14 Div. 2 level - in a battle for tourney honors, in which FC Exeter
jumped out quickly to a 1-0 lead courtesy of Heather MacDougall's 6th
minute goal.  Although Exeter carried the early play, Oyster River held
firm, and in the latter stages of the half turned the tables, but largely
due to the efforts of FCX 'keeper Jessica Long, Exeter managed to preserve
its narrow lead into the halftime break.  After ORYA missed a penalty kick
opportunity shortly after the second half restart, Exeter's potent
counter-attack produced goals from Murray and MacDougall within two minutes
of each other to blow open a close match with a suddenly-robust 3-0 lead.
ORYA's attack continued to generate chances, but continued strong 'keeper
play, last-ditch defending, and a few lucky bounces conspired to frustrate
Oyster River's attempted comeback.  The scoring would close when MacDougall
completed her "hat trick" with just under 10 minutes left to account for
the 4-0 final score.  As usual, Casey Scott pulled the strings on the
Exeter attack, with assists on all four goals on the afternoon.

Over the course of the weekend, midfielder MacDougall amassed a
team-leading total of 7 goals, while strikers Murray and Scott added 4
goals apiece.  Midfielder Petersen and striker/midfielder Laura Goodwin
added 2 goals apiece to supplement the well-balanced FCX attack, while
sweeper Jenna Connor and stopper Jenna Gill rounded out the scoring with a
goal apiece.  Other members of FC Exeter who took part in the "Memorial Day
Classic" event this year were midfielders Libby Abizaid, Erin Congdon,
Taylor Orlando, Sophie Pickett and Molly Ryan, fullbacks Kirsten Goodwin,
Roz Jones and Sydney Stella, and stopper Maura Eaton.

Exeter will wrap up its season on June 14th in Pembroke NH when they play
at their true age level in the NHSA '09 Open Cup U-13 Girls Finals against
Nashua World Cup, while trying to attain their 3rd NHSA statewide title
over the last two seasons.
