The Learn to Skate and Play League is our grass roots program to introduce ice skating and playing hockey. Anyone skating or playing hockey for the first time will participate in this program.
The Mite League consists of our youngest players, age 4 to 10, skating half-ice games with an emphasis on fun and skill development. Half-ice games enable players to handle the puck much more often than if games were played on full-ice. This format results in more shots on goal which makes the Mite League some of the most exciting hockey in the building. Game slots are one hour in length. The first 15 minutes is dedicated to skating instruction and thus the games are about 45 minutes. Line shifts allow equal playing time for all children.

After our Mites level, play turns to full ice competition. Our Atoms Division consists of graduates from our Mite Major Program and players up to 12 years old. The Atoms level is designed for players with higher skill level and familiarity of the game. This is the perfect setting for young players’ first foray into organized hockey. Emphasis is placed on player skill development, a greater understanding of the game and playing as a team.

Rounding off our House League is our Junior League, a division for older players age 12 -18. This is full-contact hockey for the older player with previous hockey experience.  Depending on the number of Juniors that register will determine the number of "teams".  Depending on numbers, this year we may use a flexible format which gives juniors 1 practice session (which will include cross ice 3v3 games) and 1 Game session.  Gameday Teams may be adjusted on a weekly basis depending on attendance.  This flexibility will allow for best parity and most fun experience for the players.  This will help Griffin to continue to provide recreational hockey for older players.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
On behalf of the Griffin Youth Hockey Association I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new GYHA President. I am truly humbled that the Board chose me to lead this great association. I hope to continue the long line of success of our past presidents including our outgoing President Chris Limoges who spearheaded our merge with Baystate thus insuring the future of our Travel Program and our former President, the tireless John Normington. It gives me great pleasure on behalf of our Board to extend a warm welcome to all players, parents, officials and coaches who will be participating in this year’s season.

As the 2009-2010 season approaches, GYHA is working very hard to insure the success of the upcoming year. Our board of volunteers has already spent dozens of hours working on all facets of our association. Many pieces of the puzzle must still be put together before our kids can take the ice.

Our goal at GYHA is to offer an affordable program focused on fitness, fun and friendship. Our organization will pursue the development of youth not just as Hockey players but as people sharing core values of commitment, discipline, work ethic and teamwork. We trust that the competition will be exciting, challenging and enjoyable with the finest level of sportsmanship. To each individual player we wish success, have fun, play hard play fair and play to the best of your ability.

The lifeblood of our organization is our Volunteer resources. The efforts of these people giving countless hours of energy and time collectively helps build a strong organization. It takes many people contributing their personnel time to make GYHA the quality organization it is. We can never have enough help. As a not for profit organization we rely on our sponsors, fundraising and the generosity of our friends to financially support our league. We encourage our parents to become involved in the association in any capacity possible.

Our immediate needs are for Coaches, Player Agent, Fund Raiser and Equipment Manager. Please contact me if you can help with any of these tasks.

As summer winds down and hockey season approaches I look forward to serving as your president. With your support, we will make the GYHA the best House program in the area. See you at the rink!

Very truly yours,
Griffin Youth Hockey Association,

Michael D. Gerrity
President
